Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Olga Murasev, founder of International Face Painting School, located in Sofia, Bulgaria.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Since 2017, we have been teaching everyone from around the world the art of face painting through our own online site. We developed a one-of-a-kind online educational system that includes theoretical and practical parts. Our main face painting course includes a step-by-step curriculum starting from the basics: what is face painting and body art, what are the professional face painting materials, and which ones to choose for the best results in learning essential face painting technics, practicing with more than 40 designs, consolidate knowledge with verification tests and a final exam. Our clients are 97% women from 67 countries.

Tell us about yourself

I started face painting as a hobby in 2011, which soon became a full-time career. I’ve always played around with art, so creativity is quite natural to me, and I was lucky to develop skills for face painting quite quickly. Over the past six years, I have created hundreds of original face-painting designs and traveled the world to share my art as an instructor. Meeting and teaching so many students in person has been my pleasure from Australia to the United States, Switzerland, Italy, Holland, Russia, Belgium, Ukraine, Israel, Kazakhstan, and more. It is incredible where the humble art of face painting can take you. And now, I have combined my experience and knowledge in one easy-to-navigate online training program — the International Face Painting School.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment is that through our face painting training courses, our students gain confidence in themselves and their strengths, discover talents and get a good push for further growth and improvement.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The most challenging thing for us was to survive COVID because we are one of the industries most affected by the pandemic. Also, the ability to recruit and work with a team of workers remotely remains one of the most difficult tasks.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start testing your idea as soon as you have a basic working prototype. We can focus on perfecting things that no one may need.
  2. Form a team from the first cases. Otherwise, you will do everything yourself for a long time.
  3. Build a high-margin model to have enough resources to hire the best people in the future.
