Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Olivia Hensal, Founder of Olea Herbals, located in New York City, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Olea Herbals is a clean, organic body, hair, and skincare brand focused on producing all-natural products infused with therapeutic herbs. I am dedicated to helping strengthen people's relationships with themselves by connecting them to their natural environment. My customers are those who are curious about herbalism, passionate about non-toxic living, and committed to living their best lives.

Tell us about yourself

I am a functional nutritionist/dietitian with a passion for medical herbalism. I started Olea Herbals when I was studying herbalism in grad school and decided that not enough people are aware of the therapeutic properties of plants all around us - despite all of our ancestors using them as food and medicine. Thus, Olea Herbals was born. As a health and wellness practitioner, I'm very motivated to help people live healthier lives! And Olea Herbals does just that by producing clean products rich in herbs.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Honestly, just getting started! I didn't have everything together, and I didn't have an audience - yet I started with what I had and have grown since then. Sometimes, getting started is the hardest part, and I feel accomplished that Olea Herbals is an established brand.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Wearing many hats. I don't have any employees (yet), so I run the operations, develop the products, content creation, marketing, events, etc. This is one of the hardest things as a small business owner because until Olea Herbals grows big enough to outsource these tasks, I'm the one doing everything, and I think all small business owners would agree with that.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't wait. It will never be the right time to start. If you have an idea that you're passionate about, just get started by putting it out into the world.
  2. Stay organized! I keep a daily planner of everything I need to do to keep the business running smoothly.
  3. Be fearless. Don't be afraid to post on your social accounts 3x a day (even if the posts aren't "perfect"), don't be afraid to tell everyone you meet and know about your business, and don't be afraid to go after what you want.
