What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a naturopathic doctor and massage therapist. I partner with local healthcare professionals to help fill the care gaps in care between specialties for their patients.

Tell us about yourself

I struggled with serious health issues from a young age and went from doctor to doctor, but nobody could figure it out. When I saw a naturopathic doctor, I was suddenly able to accomplish what I wanted to do in life, and I wanted to be able to give other people that same gift.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I started a business while in medical school, then relocated it from Seattle, WA, to Boulder, CO!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Choosing exactly what direction to focus on -- it's easy to try to be everything for everybody, but that's not a very marketable message. Nobody wants a generalist.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start with the smallest version of your idea: set up a way to make just $1 from your idea as quickly as possible.
  2. Take care of yourself: your health will hold you back if you neglect it.
  3. Read books: learn from 50% of them and ignore the other 50%. The hardest part is determining which half is which.
