Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joe Kelley, Co-Owner of Obtaining Mastery, located in Parkland, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I have been working in addiction facilities for a number of years, and through my experience, I have come to realize that addiction issues go much deeper than just drugs and alcohol. My unique experience has helped me get to the core of the individual and understand the underlying issues. That's why during my time at Hartwick College, I chose to explore the stigma of addiction in my senior thesis. My core principles in life are hard work, perseverance, and determination. Whether I am on the field, in the office, at home, or on the playground, I strive to be an inspiration to everyone in my life. As a father of five children ranging from 18 to 4 years old, I am committed to setting a positive example for them every day. In addition to my work in addiction facilities, I have also pursued further education and training. I am certified in children's yoga, hypnotherapy, NLP, time techniques, and EFT. I am a highly sought-after life coaching trainer and recently received my certificate for my LAP-C. I am constantly striving to learn and grow in order to better serve those around me.

Tell us about yourself

I'm originally from Cape Cod, MA, and I have a bachelor's degree in Sociology from Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY. While at college, I was an All-American collegiate football player, but my passion for helping others had started long before that. As a child, I was always drawn to helping others and making a positive impact. After college, I pursued my passion by working in the public sector. I served as a law enforcement officer for nine years, including K-9, Emergency Response Team, and Interview Interrogation roles. I also worked as an Adolescence social worker for the Massachusetts Department of Family and Children. Unfortunately, an on-the-job injury as a police officer led to me developing an addiction, which ultimately resulted in me being incarcerated for two years in a state penitentiary.

Despite this setback, I remained determined to turn my life around and continue working towards making a positive impact on the world. I emerged from prison clean and focused, ready to re-engage with my passion for helping others. I began working in the private sector as a clinician in the substance abuse field and eventually transitioned to business development. Now, I am a co-owner of Obtaining Mastery and serve as the Union Liaison for CWA, EAP 3140 out of Miami, Florida. My experiences have taught me that setbacks can be overcome with hard work and determination. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had to help others, and I am committed to continuing to make a positive impact in the world.
