Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Brandon Whalen, Founder of Obsession Fitness & Nutrition, located in St. Johns, NL, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My mission with Obsession is to change and touch the lives of every single person who has ever felt ashamed or afraid of who they are. Obsession is a lot more than a simple fitness brand. It's a family and a community. Be proud of who you are and what you do. Members of a community encourage one another and push one another forward despite their imperfections.

The idea of community is unique. Obsession focuses on and provides that. Be proud of who you are and what you do. You are your own competition, not the fake people you run into online. The person you were yesterday is the only competition you have. Make a 1% improvement every day, or even every month. No matter how small it seems, growth is growth. Obsess on improving yourself daily and becoming a better version of yourself. Obsession is the desire to become infatuated with oneself and to feel comfortable in one's own skin. Every day, we work hard to instill the same enthusiasm in our clients and the community that we have fostered in ourselves.

Tell us about yourself

I founded Obsession with the only purpose of bringing about change and encouraging growth in the fitness industry. I've always had a burning enthusiasm for fitness, and I want to spread that desire to others. I really believe you are capable of making a tremendous improvement in your life by balancing exercise with the other simple pleasures you love. I don't, however, want to do it alone.

I intend to inspire others to develop an obsession with themselves and spread that Obsession across the community. I want to encourage people to be positive and to focus on the beautiful things in life. The world may sometimes be a dark place, but I'm driven to make it brighter.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The simple act of watching people smile and the number of individuals our message has affected is my biggest achievement as a business owner. Observing people's bodies change and all the effort, they are willing to put in to become their best selves is by far the most fulfilling experience.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The amount of discipline and commitment required to hold oneself accountable for the ongoing success of the business is undoubtedly one of the hardest aspects of being a business owner.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

My top three suggestions for anyone trying to launch, manage, and expand a business today are...

Start out slowly and then build. It's a marathon, not a sprint. Spend some time being deliberate and concentrating on what you want to achieve and how you want to do it. Research, research, research.

Do not be scared to be unique and to take chances. The best things in life are on the other side of risk, and carving out a special niche will bring about a lot of benefits. Feel free to express yourself.

Finally, never give up. Never surrender and don't accept defeat. Never give in because, in my opinion, that's why we're all here: to make a statement. Prove yourself time and time again. Become obsessed with what you do and who you are.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

You're here for a reason. Make a statement. Become obsessed. Never surrender.
