Tell us about yourself
From Nanotechnology Researcher (University of Victoria) to Marine Engineer (Navy), to globetrotting English teacher (visiting 45 countries on five continents) to running a Nutrition and Supplement store, I've had a pretty interesting journey. Somewhere amidst the crazy adventures of my life, though, I lost myself. I went through serious trauma while living in South Africa, and my weight ballooned up to 328lbs as I grappled with PTSD, binge-eating, and I medicated my trauma with food. One morning, in Istanbul, Turkey, I woke up and decided I didn't want to be a victim to my past anymore. And so, I embarked on the most challenging journey of my life. I've lost and kept off over 100lbs. The journey involved a lot of pain and struggle as I overcame binge-eating, food addiction, anxiety, losing my life savings in a failed business. Ultimately, I am now doing what I love as a result of the incredible road I've travelled.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Building a business from the ground up, from the ashes of a previously failed business that cost me everything I had.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Balancing being a CEO, a Dad, a husband, a son, a brother, and a friend.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Start now, especially if you already have a source of stable income. Leverage your life story and experiences as a part of the fabric of why you do what you do because it creates a human, emotional connection with your clients. Work with a mentor and shorten the learning curve. But do your homework because the mentorship industry is filled with sharks.
