Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and nutrition but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cheyenne Richards, founder of Nutrition Rites, LLC., located in Mount Pleasant, SC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Nutrition Rites is a group dietetics practice. We offer convenient nutrition counseling by specialized registered dietitian nutritionists either in person, by phone, or via video Telehealth sessions. We believe that effective nutrition counseling caters to each client's individual needs. This approach is nurtured by the belief in clarity of mind, habitual good decision making, and a supportive community.

Our dietitians provide tools to help our clients achieve healthy nutrition for the long term. Our philosophy of care incorporates Intuitive Eating and Health at Every Size modalities that help embrace a positive mind-body connection. Across our team, you will find specialties in Intuitive Eating, Health at Every Size, GI, and Disordered Eating Recovery.

Tell us about yourself

I started Nutrition Rites, LLC just after becoming licensed in Texas. Austin, where I lived, was always an active epicenter with a lot of excitement around health and fitness. My husband and I began seeing a dietitian at our gym, and my interest in food and nutrition grew.

While I worked in high tech, I also did a lot of volunteer work in women's health. During this time, I became a certified birth doula and began writing a blog titled "Toddler Chow." Ultimately, I decided to go back to school for nutrition and dietetics.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am happy to say that I have found my niche. This is both incredibly important and incredibly hard sometimes. Luckily for me, my interests were also needed in my community. Being able to help those with disordered eating has continued to be a fulfilling and rewarding aspect of my job.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Setting boundaries between work and life is always a challenge. I've found that being able to organize chaos is helpful. This includes being able to see the bigger picture while managing day-to-day activities of meaning.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get a business mentor. You will want someone who aligns with your values and will shoot straight with you.
  2. Set your expectations accordingly. This may mean readjusting your expectations at times.
  3. Don't be afraid of what you want. This is especially true in the service business. Oftentimes, we undervalue ourselves.
