Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cristel Moubarak, Founder of Nutrifoodie, located in Surrey, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The core belief in nutriFoodie's practice is bridging the gap between mental & physical health through honouring and healing the relationships we have with one another, community, food, and body. This practice rises above number counting and idealistic (and unrealistic) expectations around food, eating, and body image or size. We all deserve to respect the body we're in, and we all have the right to eat and enjoy food, too.

Tell us about yourself

One day - I was thinking about my big WHY in my practice... I thought to myself: "I don't want to have another child hiding in a pantry, eating in secrecy, afraid of judgment or shame for eating" That was my childhood and adolescent years. I spent many years stuck in diet culture, pursuing that magical weight (which is never enough)... until I learned that I was always enough, and my body size doesn't dictate my value or worth. Once I healed my relationship with my own food and body, I knew I had to help other women through my lived and professional experience.

Today, I'm a non-diet, weight-inclusive and trauma-informed dietitian who works with women who are ready to give up dieting, enjoy eating again, find their nutritional sweet spot and reclaim their body, worth, and value.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Creating an app where my clients can connect with me and one another, get weekly support and accountability and learn through various methods (recorded videos, audio, reflection, activities & experiments, etc...) to meet their needs where they're at in their journey and give them new tools to stop "falling off the wagon" and to discover what it looks like to have food freedom & body peace.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Needing to charge to help people in need! I believe my work is so valuable and is so needed - and I wish I could be accessible to everyone who needs my unique services. I do have a sliding scale and payment installment options to help with that.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make mistakes. I have yet to meet someone who got where they're at from the first try.
  2. Work with a coach/mentor. Find the right person to help you move forward and upward.
  3. Celebrate your progress. Today, you're at a place you were once hoping to be at... even if you can't see that yet.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Finding your niche and what you're supposed to be doing in life is often where you feel powerful and joyful.
