Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Natalie Carroll, Founder of Nourished Mamas LLC, located in Buffalo, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Nourished Mamas is a nutrition counseling service that provides support to women during all stages of their reproductive journey. I provide evidence-based nutrition and lifestyle approaches to help women achieve their health-related goals - whether that be pregnancy, postpartum recovery, breastfeeding support, or overall help with women's health concerns (PCOS, endometriosis, irregular menstrual cycles, fertility treatments, etc.). My customers are typically women during their reproductive age that are seeking support and to optimize their nutrition through one on one counseling.
Tell us about yourself
I am a mother of 2 girls, a registered dietitian, and a lactation counselor - with over 8 years of experience in the nutrition field. After my first daughter was born, I realized that many women weren't being prioritized during their journey of getting pregnant, being pregnant, or in the postpartum stage - and many were confused as to what actionable steps they could take to help optimize their health and the health of their future children. I really wanted to be that expert voice that could not only guide but support these women through the amazing stage of becoming a mother (however that happens!). I am also an advocate for a woman's right to choose how she feeds her child in those first 6 months, and I wanted to support those that may need some additional help with breastfeeding if they desire to do so. My motivation is the success and empowerment these women obtain when they take a hold of their health and work towards their goals in a supportive and meaningful way!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Being able to create a work-life balance between my career and my family, as well as helping women feel supported in their health journey.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The success of your business, along with your client's health success, is solely on your shoulders, and it is hard to make sure that you are prioritizing both of those aspects without making one more a focus than the other.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't delay - it will never get easier or more perfect of a time to start - just start!
- Set yourself up for success - do your homework on how to best start your business and then grow it as you can.
- Invest in yourself! If you expect others to invest in you and your business, then you need to invest in yourself - get a business coach or join a mastermind of like-minded business owners - always keep developing as a business owner!
