Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Meagan McKinney, founder of Nourish with Meg, located in Victoria, BC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I’m Meagan; I am a certified Holistic Nutritionist, owner of Nourish with Meg, and member of the Canadian Association of Natural Nutritional Practitioners (CAANP). I empower others with their relationship with food through balanced nutrition. My approach to nutrition is using food as a powerful tool for healing our deeper patterns. I enjoy working one on one with clients and creating a safe place for their stories. I provide individual assessments and customized recommendations, meal plans, and hot tips that work with your own pace and lifestyle! With all of the information we have access to, it can be overwhelming to know what to eat and what will work for us personally. My goal is to make nutrition feel accessible and leave you feeling confident.

Tell us about yourself

My journey to nutrition began as a caregiver, where I witnessed a loved one endure chemotherapy and radiation in the confines of our medical system. This experience ignited a fire in me to seek resolutions and prevention with healing through food. With this as my foundation, I have built further upon my desire to support others in their healing journey. During my education, we complete 360 hours of clinical hours. Building connections with my clients and watching the transformations that have taken place over the last few years motivates me each day to show up for my clients and continue to learn.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I launched my website, Nourish, with Meg just shy of graduating. I really enjoyed the creative process of building a place for people to learn what I offer and who I am as a practitioner. By launching this right before my graduation, I was fortunate to step right into, feeling prepared and ready to accept clients. Fortunately, my last semester was very light, and I had the time and space to be able to fulfill this.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

For me, one of the hardest things is building your business while managing your daytime job. Allowing myself the space to grow and permission to take things at my own pace is essential to avoid burnout. Keep the vision I have for myself ahead of me as I maneuver the first few years, knowing things will continue to open up and shift as I go.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take your time and enjoy the creative process. Not everything has to happen all at once! We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to have everything perfect. Let things evolve naturally as you grow in your business and ideas.
  2. Reach out for support from other business owners, mentors, or friends for ideas, collaborations, or areas where you feel you need some advice. We are all here together to uplift each other and encourage other entrepreneurs.
  3. Create a space for your work that feels clear, and make it fun! Take yourself out to a cute coffee shop, grab a treat or light a candle, make a cup of tea and turn on some music that will get you in the zone. (Britney Spears in the zone works very well.) Creating the space is essential for me to feel productive and enjoy the work! It can’t always be vibe worthy, but it sure does help sometimes!
