Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Natalie Ham, Owner of Nourish Natural Medical Center, located in Tempe, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Nourish Natural Medical Center is a naturopathic wellness center that offers holistic, alternative treatments for many diseases. We use lifestyle counseling, diet support, homeopathy, herbs, supplementation, acupuncture, and hydrotherapy to treat our patients with the least means possible to get the maximum potential. We are a family practice that treats all people of all ages.

Tell us about yourself

I opened Nourish 7 years ago after practicing with another talented set of Naturopathic doctors that were moving their practice. I wanted to create a practice of my own that would set a warm, inviting healing experience for my patients. I am very lucky at the success that Nourish has had, and I am grateful every day for my patients and this practice.

Watching my patients succeed on their health journeys is my main motivating factor. Seeing them have the results they have always wanted: Conceiving a baby they were told they couldn't have, reducing or eliminating pain without medications or surgery, and healing from past trauma to go on to help others with their own journey. These are just a few of the incredible things that we see daily that inspire us all.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a business owner, it is an accomplishment to continue to see your practice grow from year to year and mold into your dreams. Two more Naturopathic Doctors just joined Nourish, and I am very excited for continued future growth.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest part of being a business owner, I think, was taking the initial leap and having to have that faith that you will be able to succeed...but you never know unless you try.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Hire people that you would actually like to eat lunch with every day because you will.
  2. Make sure you are doing what you love because it truly is a labor of love, and if you do not love it, you will not be inspired by it, and people can feel that.
  3. Hire for what you do not know how to do, do not try and do it all on your own. I am a doctor, not an accountant, so for all the time I might be trying to figure out something outside of my specialty, I am not spending that time on what I love and what will grow my practice.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

When you feel overwhelmed, just remember why you started your business and who were looking to help. Get re-inspired. Growth, both personal and business, never feels easy in the transition process, but the outcome can be more than you ever dreamed.
