Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jessica Meyer, Founder & CEO of Sweet Sushi Inc., located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Sweet Sushi isn't just a snack. It isn't just a product. It's a philosophy. The world is a crispy rice sandbox, and the possibilities are endless.

Created by mother of three and pastry chef Jessica Meyer in 2004, what started as a hobby is now a sensation across the GTA. Puffed rice, marshmallows, Belgian chocolate, fruit leather, and premium bonbons all come together in the roll reversal you didn't know you needed. It's a wholesome brand inspired by a love of family, with three generations of bakers making the world a little nicer, one sweet treat at a time.

Sweet Sushi. It's what's for dessert.

Tell us about yourself

Jessica graduated from the George Brown Culinary Management and, in 2004, started experimenting with dessert sushi out of her parents' kitchen. Her creations quickly started to gain popularity, and the orders from her friends and family were rolling in. Before she knew it, Sweet Sushi was born.

Jessica was working round-the-clock fulfilling orders and expanding her product line. Jessica took a break when her first child was born, and three kids later, in February 2020, she decided to start working in a shared kitchen space. When the pandemic hit, Jessica quickly pivoted to selling Do-It-Yourself Kits. And as a result of the enormous success, she was able to open her own store-front location in September of 2020.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

In 2020 when the pandemic hit, Jessica quickly pivoted and came up with do-it-yourself at home Sweet Sushi kits that became so popular that she opened her own storefront in September of 2020.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The bakery may only be open from 9 am - 5 pm Monday to Saturday, but the work never ends! Running your own business takes a lot of dedication and hard work and is an around-the-clock commitment.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Always go with your gut, follow your dreams and work hard. Anything is possible. Believe in yourself!!
