Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Matthew Vincent, Owner of NOT DEAD YET, located in Saint Louis, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own an apparel company, NOT DEAD YET. We started out making apparel for the strength industry and have evolved into a lifestyle brand, making quality apparel and gear for those who want the most out of the lives in front of them. NOT DEAD YET LIFE- is my mentorship program. In my journey, I have had to get through hard times, the untimely death of my father, the loss of my identity as an athlete, and the mid-life awareness that comes from realizing I am on a path that isn't aligned with the life I want to live. I help people learn the skills and tools I did to master their mindset. Their mindset is the limiting factor in what they believe is possible. Seeing people unlock the awareness that they can do anything as long as they are willing to show up and put in the work.

Tell us about yourself

I was competing and writing during my time as a Highland games athlete. This led me to make apparel, host a podcast (NOT DEAD YET), and be able to Create for a living. This is the exact path I want to be on. One that I have chosen, one that I am accountable for all the successes and failures. This keeps me from ever feeling like I am letting some other forces take control in my life. I stay motivated with the understanding and acceptance that my time here alive Is limited. I want to do as much as I can while I have the opportunity.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Fully embracing that I am the only person in control of my future. Being able to continue to take on opportunities that I would have never imagined because of the freedom Entrepreneurship brings.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Owning all the failures and managing my expectations. Staying out of the mindset where I am comparing to others businesses.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. DO IT. It is going to require the absolute best of you in so many ways. It has taught me time and time again how to manage stress, creatively think, find information and discipline.
  2. Figure out exactly what you want to do and WHY? Your why is what will sustain the motivation. Make sure your WHY is big enough to charge head forward into any HOW you get it done.
  3. Build a community around your business. This is what people need most and are desperate for. Provide them with a place to connect.
  4. Let go of expectations and lean into making sure you are following your intention of WHY you wanted to start your own business anyway. Don't get caught up in the identity as a business owner instead of realizing why you wanted the freedom anyway.
