Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Peter Stancato, founder of Nosotros Rock Climbing Gym, located in Lakewood, OH, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Nosotros is one of four nonprofit rock climbing gyms on Earth. Or so we're told! Most of our customers are new to the sport and never climbed before visiting us.
Tell us about yourself
I only climbed three times before opening my rock climbing gym. This means that anyone can be a climber. My first time climbing was fantastic because the people were encouraging. My second and third times climbing were even better. And so I figured, I'm ready to start a gym. Each day I'm motivated by giving our customers an excellent experience.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
One time a customer said that the gym saved his life. He was an addict for 20 years and finally found a healthy practice fun enough to replace his addiction.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The fact that I really care about people is my best and worst quality. I go to great depths to make sure staff and customers are happy. When they're appreciative, I feel great. But I've found that there are some people I just can't please. And it's hurtful. I take it personally and often lose sleep over it. I'm maturing in this area.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
One tip for starting a business is to grow your audience immediately. Start blogging and posting to gain interest. One tip for running a business is to act like Jesus - meaning - treat people the way you want to be treated. Go the extra mile, look in people's eyes, offer hugs, and be genuine. One tip for growing a business is constantly asking for feedback and not getting offended by it.
