Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cortney Kaveh, Owner of Northwest Money Coaching LLC., located in Sherwood, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My financial coaching business, Northwest Money Coaching LLC, consists of 3 main things: education, guidance, and accountability. I educate clients on personal and business financial topics, I help them decide what to do with that information, and I hold them accountable for their goals.

In my group business, Powerhouse Coaches LLC, I manage our private online community for financial coaches: the Powerhouse Coach Collaborative. I ensure members have an engaging experience and ensure back-end technology is working smoothly.

With daily money manager services at Northwest Money Coaching, I create and maintain clients' budgets and pay bills on time. I communicate with them about the state of their financial situation to keep them updated.

Tell us about yourself

I thought I NEVER wanted to be an entrepreneur! I started working for myself after a year of caring for my kids full-time at home. I took a financial coaching certification course and started my own business. Back in 2014, I was newly married, and I convinced my husband we needed to make a plan to pay off [his] student loan debt. We followed Dave Ramsey's 7 baby steps and paid off $145,000 in 4 years and 9 months. After that experience, we volunteered and taught at Dave Ramsey's financial peace university, and it felt amazing to help others pursue financial freedom as we did. Once I learned I could do this for a living, I was sold. Total dream job!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been getting to do work I LOVE while getting paid well to do it.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Wearing ALL the hats! I am an owner, operator, bookkeeper, marketer, customer service rep, salesperson, etc., the list goes on. Developing competency in all areas of business ownership has been challenging and fun.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Learn from those who are already doing it.
  2. Be financially prepared - have a steady source of income WHILE building your business (it takes time).
  3. Get plugged into a community of support along the way.
