Tell us about yourself

I am a registered psychotherapist who specializes in art therapy. I've been practicing as an art therapist for over 7 years, and my work has touched the lives of many individuals struggling with mental health issues. My journey to becoming an art therapist was shaped by my own personal experiences and my passion for using art as a tool for healing. My interest in art therapy was sparked when I was a police officer and struggling with my own mental health challenges. I found that creating art was a way for me to express my emotions and cope with my feelings. This experience inspired me to pursue a career in art therapy, where I could help others use art as a means of healing and self-expression. I completed my Honours Bachelor of Arts degree at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Canada. I then went on to earn a graduate-level Diploma in Art Therapy at the Toronto Art Therapy Institute in Toronto. Since then, I have worked with a wide range of clients, including adolescents, adults, and seniors, all with a variety of mental health issues.

For me, the most rewarding aspect of art therapy is seeing the positive impact it can have on my clients' lives. I believe that art therapy provides a unique opportunity for individuals to express themselves in ways that may be difficult or impossible to put into words. The creative process of making art can be incredibly empowering, allowing individuals to take control of their mental health and work through their issues in a safe, supportive environment. I also emphasize the importance of the therapeutic relationship in my work. Building a strong rapport with my clients is crucial to establishing trust and creating a safe space for them to explore their emotions through art. I strive to create an environment that is welcoming, non-judgmental, and supportive, where my clients can feel heard and validated. In my daily practice, I incorporate a variety of art mediums, including drawing, painting, collage, and sculpture. I tailor my approach to each individual's needs and preferences, recognizing that everyone's journey toward healing is unique. I'm also an advocate for the field of art therapy, working to promote greater awareness and recognition of its benefits. I believe that art therapy can be an incredibly effective tool for treating a wide range of mental health issues, from anxiety and depression to trauma and addiction.

In conclusion, my journey to becoming an art therapist was shaped by my own personal experiences and my passion for using art as a tool for healing. My dedication to my clients and my belief in the power of art therapy are evident in my daily practice. Through my work, I have helped many individuals navigate their mental health challenges and find hope and healing through the creative process. That's why I do it!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think my bigger accomplishment is seeing clients improve their health and well-being and "graduating" from therapy. The ability to connect with people and work with them as they navigate their challenges and to help them along their journey.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There are many challenges associated with running a business, but one of the hardest things is managing and navigating through uncertainty and unpredictability, especially in the health and wellness sector. All Businesses are influenced by a range of internal and external factors, including changes in the market, fluctuations in the economy, evolving consumer trends, and technological advancements. I find that spreading the word about the benefits of art therapy is a challenge because it is new to the Thunder Bay Area, and people aren't as familiar with art therapy as other forms of therapy, and it can be challenging to anticipate and adapt to these changes in a timely and effective manner.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Define Your Business Idea and Target Audience: Before starting a business, it is important to have a clear understanding of what your business idea is and who your target audience is. You need to identify a gap in the market and find a unique way to address that gap. Conduct market research and create a business plan that outlines your mission, goals, and strategies.
  2. Build a Strong Network: Networking is crucial when starting a business. It is important to build relationships with other entrepreneurs, industry experts, and potential customers. Attend networking events, join industry associations, and connect with people on social media platforms. This will help you to build your brand, gain exposure, and attract potential customers.
  3. Focus on Financial Management: Proper financial management is critical to the success of any business. Develop a budget, track your income and expenses, and create a financial plan. You need to have a clear understanding of your cash flow, profitability, and investment needs. Consider hiring a financial advisor or accountant to help you manage your finances effectively.
