What's your business, and who are your customers?

I’m a best-selling author, lecturer of digital industries, and a TEDx speaker & coach. Most of my readers are into memoirs, biographies, and historical novels.

Tell us about yourself

I’ve always been a visual artist, so my passion for writing came about after wanting to give my father’s voice a platform. He was one of eighty thousand Ugandan Asians expelled by dictator Amin in 1972. I was desperate to share his story, so I undertook a creative writing course and inevitably published his memoir, Expelled from Uganda, in May 2021. The motivation came from wanting to create awareness of a lost segment of history.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been the response I’ve received globally upon publishing Expelled from Uganda, along with standing on the red carpet at TEDx and sharing my message on a world platform.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Sometimes, staying motivated with the intention of up-skilling can be a real challenge. Pushing yourself to the next level can be tough, but rather than focus on the mountain you want to climb, it’s best to stay focused on the few steps in front of you.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Control the controllable at any one time. Leave the rest for when you’re in the right position to tackle tasks. This is key when it comes to efficiency.
  2. Know exactly what steps you have to take to achieve your immediate goals.
  3. From time to time, remind yourself of ‘why’ you started your journey in the first place. This will always keep you motivated.
