Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nicole Vogel, Founder of DLG Styles Hair, located in Houston, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

DLG Styles Hair is a boutique hair salon that focuses on the integrity of the hair with hand-tied hair extensions and customized color. Since hand-tied hair extensions are the most natural permanent extensions offered today, you can wear your hair in multiple styles without having them detected by the human eye.

My clients are women from 18+ who are experiencing hair loss, have never grown their hair longer than chin length, someone looking for fullness, and anyone who is trying to grow their hair out in general or wants a new look without coloring their natural hair. My clients are in every industry, from stay-at-home moms, doctors, small business owners, students, and even strippers. My salon is a private judgment-free zone where you can relax and treat yourself to a great experience and a new look. Since extensions have become so much more popular than before, I pride myself on making sure everyone who sits in my chair is treated like royalty and given 100% of my attention to detail.

Tell us about yourself

I was born and raised in Friendswood, TX, 30 minutes south of Houston. Since I was a kid, I have always been in love with the beauty industry and the new looks you can achieve from a new hairstyle. I moved to Houston, TX, in 2010, where I started in the beauty industry at one of the top 10 salons while attending Cosmetology school. I stayed at that salon for 7.5 years before my family experienced the sudden death of my 40-year-old big sister and unborn niece. I then decided to become my youngest nephew's nanny in Austin, TX, for eight months before opening my salon suite back in Houston. DLG Styles Hair was born in February 2019 and has been thriving as a private boutique salon at My Salon Suites in Houston, TX.

In November 2021, I got married to my best friend and became a step-mom to the best daughter ever. I love spending time with them and our adopted chihuahua, Lil mama. My family is beyond supportive, and they motivate me daily to be the best version of myself. When I'm not working behind the chair or on my business, you can catch me with my family, catching up on The Real Housewives, riding my Peloton, or enjoying a good concert at a local venue.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to re-build loyal clients and becoming a Featured Member Nationwide for My Salon Suites is truly a huge accomplishment. I was 1 out of 11 people chosen out of 6,000+ members nationwide to represent where I rent my salon suite. I was given a whole suite make-over and many opportunities I never thought would have been possible. Not only was it an amazing fun experience, but I was able to share the journey with my clients, and they all love my new salon make-over.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One challenge I have run into is taking time for myself and allowing myself to relax. When you have a business, your brain is constantly thinking of ways to grow. I have to remind myself that it's okay to take a day off so I don't burn out.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. LOCATION.
  2. Get an accountant who won't sugarcoat things for you.
  3. STAY ORGANIZED.
