Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in beauty and cosmetics but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nicole Taylor, Founder of Nicole Lynn Artistry, located in Garden City, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are an on-location hair & makeup team. We focus mainly on weddings but have branched out to do photoshoots and other events like prom, social events, etc. We are all in at any time we can make a woman feel good about themselves!

Tell us about yourself

Born & raised in Michigan, I started my journey 10 years ago in Florida, where I attended Aveda Institute and began my journey as a hair therapist. I fell in love with updos, and soon after school assisted a bridal company doing hair. I knew I was in the right place and continued my journey to my move to the lone star state of Texas. I trained under an amazing business owner and makeup artist, learning insightful artistry skills and techniques.

After many years from home, I moved back, where I started my own business and continued to grow my company. Every event holds a special place in my heart; I love every moment that comes along with booking my brides. From the beginning, as we build our relationship on to the trial and to end on their wedding day. Every wedding is different, but no matter what, I love making my brides feel like they are the most beautiful person on earth that day! Nothing beats it!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment thus far has definitely been building my team to accommodate the 60+ weddings we are now booking. And being published multiple times last year and this year!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Making sure that everything runs smoothly from start to finish. Building a team with the vibe and atmosphere that you promise your brides makes it hard to find others who want to put out the work you expect, so finding those who fit within the crew can be difficult.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Start with focusing on the vibe you want to present to your clients and stick with that. It can set you apart from other people in the industry. I also suggest finding a team (if you need one) that fits within that vibe; it's important to be cohesive from start to finish and, most importantly, listen to your clients. Listen to listen, not react. Clients appreciate it when you hear them instead of hearing what you want to hear. I'm always honest and upfront with my clients, allowing them to feel secure and at ease when booking.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Most importantly, be in love with your business. Being a small business owner can be hard. But as long as you stay focused and not let others get to you, you can really thrive! Connecting with like-minded individuals truly helps too. The wedding business can be hard, but I've had quite a bit of support within the industry! So don't be afraid to connect with other vendors in your field.
