Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nicholas Sholl, Owner of Nick's Online Trombone Academy, located in Mönchengladbach, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Nick's Online Trombone Academy is focused on providing fun and effective educational resources for hobby trombone players. The main focus is learning to play by intuition, so by ear without notation, as well as injury prevention techniques.

Tell us about yourself

During the Covid pandemic, I realised the possibilities of online education. I love connecting with trombone players worldwide and sharing my passion for the instrument. Having had several playing-related injuries over the years, it is very satisfying to help others recover from a variety of problems that come from bad technique or posture.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Creating the course 'Bone Basics - intuitive foundations at the Trombone' in English and German languages.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The long-term goals that need to be built like a marathon runner.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get clear about your true intentions first - "making money" is not enough to sustain you. It has to be a passion project.
  2. If you're making a course or digital product for the first time, begin as small as possible. A micro-course or webinar. See it as a test run. This will help prevent being overwhelmed by the process.
  3. Find a community that can aid and support you in your niche: Facebook groups, local business meetings, etc. They can guide you through the inevitable slumps that are part of the growth of your business.
