Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nicki Turner, Owner of Cori Rose Handmade, located in Lakeland, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Hi! I’m Nicki Turner, and I’m the owner of Cori Rose Handmade. I sell handmade jewelry in multiple store locations and through VIP-curated subscription boxes. My customers are everyday women who want to elevate their look with our jewelry. Women who aren’t afraid to be themselves and enjoy bringing a little color into their lives. Every piece of our collection can easily transition with any outfit, whether casual or elegant.

Tell us about yourself

I started my journey with making jewelry three years ago while crafting with my daughters. We made the cutest donut charms together, and while I love donuts, working with clay made me wonder what other things I could make for adults.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment has been starting. There are so many what-ifs, unknowns, and fear. I’m not typically one to wade into the unknown or take risks, but I couldn’t shake the opportunity to build a career doing something I love.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing has been finding my own voice in my branding and marketing. There are so many ways to grow and sell, but if you can’t find your voice in it, your ideal customer or client won’t be able to differentiate you from everyone else.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Embrace your uniqueness; someone out there needs what you’re offering in a way only YOU can. Let your personality and skills be a part of your offering.
  2. Start slow and enjoy the view. There’s so much to be learned in the journey of entrepreneurship racing toward goals and levels of success will lead to burnout and failed opportunities for growth.
  3. Be careful who you learn from. Beware of those who want payment first and a relationship after. The best teachers start by giving you their very best before they ask you for anything in return.
