Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Anna Katherine, Founder of Niagara Proposals, located in Niagara Falls, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are proposal planners and experts in creating your vision a reality & executing your dream proposal! Our clients are anyone who wants to blow their significant other out of the water and celebrate their love and the start of a beautiful journey with a proposal out of a fairy tale.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Anna Katherine; I am a 27-year-old motivated individual. I have always been a serial entrepreneur who balances business and full-time work. I have a passion for what I do as I have worked in hospitality and events all of my life. I started Niagara Proposals because I have a passion for celebrations & making dreams a reality, and going above & beyond client's expectations; I have ambitions to one day surround myself in celebrations and make people happy - I hope to grow Niagara Proposals into a full-service high-end event company & more one day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far is honestly the happiness of my clients after proposals. Every proposal and event brings tears to my eyes. I am a sucker for romance!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is finding your work/life balance, being able to disconnect yet still stay connected, AKA knowing in this industry you have to be always on and put the guests first but still being able to find a way to relax & de-stress and put yourself first. I feel like after a few years of balancing this business, another business & a full-time job also in the industry, I have done this, and it's such a relief to be able to take a day off and recharge so I can go through the rest of the week full of energy for my clients and celebrations. It takes almost just as much commitment and mental capacity to disconnect in business as it does to stay connected and do great work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Keep your finances in order - it will pay off. Take a day each month to organize this. I wish I had done it sooner.
  2. Social media, social media, social media - this is HUGE.
  3. Growing means outsourcing; that means being a CEO, not just your own employee.
