Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Roland Hanekroot, Founder of New Perspectives Coaching, located in West Launceston, TAS, Australia.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is New Perspectives Coaching. I am a business and life coach for business owners. I help business owners who feel overwhelmed and stuck to make their business and life work better together and to get unstuck by making business Fun again.

Tell us about yourself

I sold my building company in 2003 and commenced training and developing my coaching business from that time. From my own experience as a business owner, I realized that there was a need for high-quality one-on-one support for business owners who are struggling. Too often, business owners run around all day from crisis to crisis and spend their evenings doing the admin, quoting, and organizing till all hours, not getting enough sleep and missing out on spending time with their loved ones. I love going on a journey with my clients to turn the ship around and what motivates me above all is seeing the weight start to slip from my client's shoulders and seeing the excitement of feeling in control of their businesses and lives again start to sparkle back in their eyes.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have many success stories of the work I've done with my clients, from improvements in work-life balance to major expansion of my client's businesses and multiplication of profit. The thing I am most proud of in what I do is that at the end of my engagements with my clients, we always have a genuine celebration over a long slap-up lunch, and most of my clients have remained long-term friends.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The fact that it's all down to you. All decisions are made by you, everything has to be thought of by you, all crises initially land on your doorstep, and everyone looks to you to have the answers. Being a business owner can be a lonely experience at times and an overwhelming one.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't think you can or ought to do it all on your own. The mark of a successful business owner is that he or she is prepared to ask for help. It takes a village.
  2. You are the most valuable resource of your business. Your time, your health, and your brain cells are truly the only assets of the business that are limited. Every time you say yes to something, it means you are, by definition, saying no to something else. So learn to check that what you are saying yes to is actually the most important thing for you to use that time and those brain cells for at that moment.
  3. Learn to be kind to yourself and look after yourself. You got this far; most people don't or don't even start. Stop and pat yourself on the back from time to time and give yourself a smile; it makes business and life so much better.
