Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jeannie Grashorn, Founder of New Nurse Support, located in Grand Rapids, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

New Nurse Support is an educational coaching platform that provides support and guidance to nurses as they navigate their careers. I help new and experienced nurses alike with skills like interviewing and writing an effective résumé. I also cover all the topics nursing school doesn't prepare nurses for – like negotiating pay, how to set healthy work/life boundaries, and the importance of mindset work.

Tell us about yourself

As a nursing leader, interviewing and hiring nurses has always been a big part of my role. I started to notice trends in the nurses I was interviewing - finding that many were not prepared and really couldn't adequately answer even basic interview questions. This is initially what prompted me to create my platform - which started with just sharing interview tips to help nurses improve their skills.

Over the last two years, my business has evolved and grown to help nurses in all areas of their careers. Helping nurses increase their knowledge and grow their confidence in areas like interviewing and networking equips and empowers them to have better opportunities and find the right role for them!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I feel accomplished in that I created this digital platform that allows me to help nurses all over the world! It's so rewarding to me each and every time a client reaches out to share their wins with me - like landing their dream job!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Self-doubt and imposter syndrome are tough things to work through as you create your own business. You're creating something new without a blueprint or anything to follow. I've had to work through feelings like - do I even know what I'm talking about? Are people interested in this? Is it valuable information? I have to continually work on my mindset as I continue to grow my business and try new things.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just get started. Action is the key, even if you don't know where to start. It's easy to get stuck in the 'preparation' phase and try to make the perfect plan. But entrepreneurship takes a lot of trial and error to find what works for you, and you only discover that by doing.
  2. Be consistent. This is the hardest to do when you feel like you're not growing and nothing is happening. But putting forth that consistent action will pay off.
  3. Find your people. Starting a business is exciting, but it's also lonely. Most people never try to start their own business. Those in your circle probably don't understand what you're doing. It's helpful to be a part of entrepreneurship groups, so you're in spaces with others who have similar interests and goals.
