Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joel Solish, Founder of Never Not Eating, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

As it says on our website: At Never Not Eating, we are grounded in the cultural and culinary contexts of the products we have handcrafted, with respect and reverence to those who have cooked before us. Our chef-inspired spice blends, marinades, and sauces are designed to inspire you with the flavours of the Middle East and North Africa and bring these flavours to your table. We have done all the work for you sourcing and crafting the freshest ingredients so you can recreate a bold-flavoured restaurant-quality meal at home to transport you to somewhere more exotic. Bon appetit, בתיאבון, بالعافية!

Tell us about yourself

With Never Not Eating, I wanted to bring more Middle Eastern and North African flavours to people's plates. These are my favourite styles of cuisine to cook and eat. The business was launched because people on social media always asked for my shawarma recipe when I would post it, so why not sell them the spice blend ready to go? Also, some other flavors I am a fan of that people can be creative with. So, I am always motivated by chefs and home cooks posting what they do with our spice blends and cooking new recipes in my own test kitchen.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I don't focus on single accomplishments; rather, I stay motivated every day to keep pushing this brand to be the best it can be. Just bringing this to life and having people say nice things about it is enough of a start.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being an entrepreneur is knowing when to give control of any aspect of your business to someone else, but also knowing when that is important as a part of resource efficiency.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't wait for ideal timing; that timing is now.
  2. Trust in yourself and the resources in your network (or hire a trusted consultant to help you with challenges).
  3. Only use other people's accomplishments to motivate yourself to be better.
