Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Julie Fultz, Owner of Nerdylovedesigns, located in Claremore, OK, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Nerdylovedesigns is a local business that I run from home located in Claremore, Ok. For the most part, my customers are all local to me. Coming from surrounding towns like Tulsa, Owasso, and more. I have also shipped my products out of state and even internationally. I specialize in custom items. Mostly custom tumblers, but I also offer other resin items, including glitter pens, keychains, and so much more.

Tell us about yourself

I suffer from multiple health issues, including an autoimmune disorder and fibromyalgia. I left my job after moving in with my boyfriend and needed something to pass the time. So I started crafting. He then talked me into turning it into a business. He has continued to support me in this. Even when I decided to move into making a tumbler and bringing glitter into the house, he built me my first two cup turners. He and our son continue to be my motivation in all things I do, and both support me in this journey.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Since I started this business, I never thought I would be where I am now. I have become a board member for my local farmers market because of it. Something I would never have even thought about. I am also a vendor there every Saturday during the season. I'm so thankful to be a part of it and to be able to help my community grow.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Balance. With my health, I have to very carefully balance work and self-care. And the hours can be rough. Even if I'm not working, I'm thinking about it. Balancing home, health, and work is very hard. And it is very important to find that balance.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Research what you are getting into before jumping in. I get asked a lot by newer businesses starting out what licenses they need. But the answer isn't cookie-cutter for every business. Make sure what you are going to do sparks joy; if it doesn't, you will get burnt out fast. Make a plan or keep a calendar to keep yourself on track. Trust me; it's easy to get off track easily.
