What's your business, and who are your customers?
We improve retention, attraction, and remote culture by coaching healthy positivity. By training managers first, then employees, we help companies reduce negativity, boost productivity and improve their bottom line. Our customers are generally small to medium companies who want inexpensive, easily implemented ideas that will change their team and organizational cultures.
Tell us about yourself
Long before I studied kindness, I experienced it. One person’s kindness made a difference in my life. That one act of kindness changed my life. Now I help others use micro-actions of kindness to increase positivity where they work and live. The workplace can seem like a daily ordeal, with harassment, bullying, toxic bosses, and quiet quitting employees. But I know that human beings have the ability to unleash the power of kindness in others.
Studies have measured the endorphin levels in a person offering kindness, in the person receiving kindness, and in people viewing it –people who simply witness the kindness occurring to someone else. The endorphin spike is the same in all three people! When I can inspire a manager to practice small positive micro-actions, I know their efforts will positively influence their direct reports, other leaders, and even their families and friends.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I speak on average 40 times a year to groups from 50 to 1500 and was a presenter to 20,000 participants at the Servant Leadership Online Training Summit with Liz Wiseman, Cheryl Bachelder, and Ken Blanchard.
I co-authored with Ken Blanchard and others the bestselling business book, Servant Leadership In Action, described by INC Magazine as “One of the Most Anticipated Leadership Books Ever Published."
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things is to push through in areas that are not my strengths. It's easier to be distracted by challenges I know how to address and leave the important but harder tasks for later.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be sure you are doing something you love and are passionate about because you are going to be doing it for a long time and investing energy in others who are all about that same thing.
- Pursue relationships and opportunities as a kind human being wanting to support others. Partnerships and collaborations generally grow within relationships of trust and mutuality.
- Don’t quit your day job just yet. I have a spouse that calls “BS” on my big ideas and always tells me to show her the money. Thank goodness for her. Otherwise, I would chase opportunities without confidence or realistic expectations that I was going to be able to make a living. Move forward as your new business is able to replace your existing income.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I know there are people who want to be positive influencers at home, at work, and in the community. To make that kind of difference, they need simple and easy ways to make kindness and positivity a more consistent, everyday part of their lives or the life of their organization. That’s why I created 30 micro-actions so natural, so easy, that they become second nature. These are actions so tiny it is almost easier to do them than not to do them. And I have developed the workbook and training to turn intentions into habits, so ordinary people can create a positive work environment.
