Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Steven Katz, Owner of Naturopathic Physicians Group, located in Scottsdale, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Naturopathic Physicians Group is an alternative medical clinic that has served Arizona residents for nearly 20 years. We use a patient-centered approach to medicine and strive to find the root cause of your conditions. Our customers tend to be patients who have tried many other forms of medicine and treatments and have not gotten anywhere with those treatments. We educate our patients not only to get better but on how to stay better. We thrive in our ability to make our office the last doctor stop for patients seeking to feel better and heal.

Tell us about yourself

I worked in a pharmacy for over six years and was a pre-pharmacy major at Arizona State University during my undergraduate education. While working in the pharmacy, I noticed that the more medications patients took, the worse they looked from a health standpoint. I realized that I did not want to just give people prescriptions for my career. I then found out about naturopathic medicine and how that doctorate could fulfill my career desires. I now pride myself on helping patients get off of their meds.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

When I first bought the practice, the office was going through many changes. Two of the doctors in the office were retiring, the manager of 16 years was resigning, and one of the other long-standing receptionists was leaving as well. The ability of the office to not only get through such an intense transition but to continue to thrive has made me a proud business owner. When changes are happening, you are unsure of what to expect. The fact that we did so well with the transition and how smooth it went makes me feel empowered moving forward.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Learning how to adapt to the ever-changing world is difficult, and learning the best way to market yourself and your clinic.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Learn how to separate work from home. Being able to keep work at work will help ensure that you do not burn out as well as it helps keep your home life happy.
  2. Market yourself everywhere you go. If you use name tags or shirts with your logo on them, wear them. Everywhere you go, the people around you are potential clients. If they do not know who you are, then they wouldn't know what you do.
  3. Hire good staff.
