Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Denice Moffat, Owner of Natural Health Techniques, located in Deary, ID, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a holistic veterinarian, naturopath, and medical intuitive who works as an online consultant. My 950-page website and internationally distributed newsletter have been functioning since 2004. We have a 40-acre farm that keeps us busy between consults, and my husband and I grow most of our own food.

Tell us about yourself

I've always wanted to be a veterinarian ever since I can remember. Graduated from vet school in 1989 and have been in the veterinary field for over 53 years. It was a couple of years after I graduated from vet school when I had a dog with a skin disease who would not get well no matter what allopathic protocol I followed that I went down the rabbit hole of natural medicine. I'm so glad I did. I will never ever go back to practicing strictly allopathic medicine. I'm fully a 'mixer' now. I use whatever works for the case (be it a human or animal case) after exploring what the client does, where they live, what they eat, and how they think. By finding techniques and lifestyle changes that are tailor-made for each case, I have seen more miracles in a month than I ever saw as a regular veterinarian in a year! I LOVE this stuff, and I love my chosen professions.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far, I think, is to have designed a life and work schedule that works for my many areas of interest. We are able to live in a beautiful environment while doing what we love and working from home. My husband and I believe in the Law of Attraction and Vision Boards, and we pretty much manifest anything we really want.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I think some of the most difficult things that a healer has to overcome are poverty consciousness, saying no to the people you can't help (and knowing that Spirit will accommodate and provide the funds to pay your bills), figuring out what to stock and how to charge for your services and of course keeping all the plates spinning and the wheels oiled to keep those clients coming in. It takes continual learning and persistence! It's all about overcoming and working through life lessons which can be difficult and challenging sometimes.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a tribe of people (like a mastermind group) who will support you in your dream and provide some useful mentoring and interactions to overcome challenges along the way.
  2. Don't stop studying - be open to learning new ways of doing things. Find what works and do more of that. Do more of what you're good at and eventually hire people to do what you are not enjoying.
  3. Challenge yourself every day to do "first things first" in making things happen so that you can continue to build the practice that works for you and your lifestyle. Don't give up!
