Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nate Workman, VP of Sales & Marketing at Workman Success System, located in Salt Lake City, UT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Workman Success Systems is a business coaching company that is the only one of its kind specializing in Real Estate teams and Real Estate Companies, and we do so in a unique way. We focus on the totality of the business and customize and tailor our coaching for each client. Success for us is measured in the life balance and ability to give back that our clients gain as their business grows year over year at an extremely fast rate. We have been helping Realtors, Team Leaders, Brokers, and companies for almost a decade. Our clients are licensed Real Estate agents that are making an average of $300,000 when they start coaching and are looking to start a team or grow and develop their current team.

Tell us about yourself

I am the VP of Sales and Marketing. I started nine years ago as the only salesperson, receiving a stack of cards to call through and a laptop with no power cord. I went from making 100% of the sales to now less than 10% and am now more focused on business development and people development.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being able to work as a family. This may seem like a small task, but the ability to work with a Father, Brother, and sister all in the business is a challenge that has been far from easy but extremely rewarding.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Understanding the impact that all the decisions made on everyone in the company and consistently trying to just make the best choices even though not everyone will feel like it was the right thing. Being responsible for a lot of people is hard, and all you want to do is make sure they are taken care of while understanding that you can make everyone happy all the time.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Hire a coach - It is important to have someone on the outside looking in that has no horse in the race and just wants success for you.
  2. Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you. Don't worry about hiring people that are more qualified because you fear they will take your place. That's what you want them to do. Hire A players.
  3. Be smart with your money and time. Figure out the activities that are going to move the needle the most where you want and focus on them. Stay in the direction and don't get sucked into the day-to-day motion that has you busy all day but not accomplishing anything.
