What's your business, and who are your customers?
I've been tutoring students of all ages since 2010. My specialties are math, writing, and test preparation. I have helped many adults - but even more children and teenagers!
Tell us about yourself
I actually started out as a freelance writer before expanding to tutoring. Since high school, math has had a special place in my heart, so I offered to help others better understand the intricacies of a universal subject. Over time, I also began to tutor language arts, including writing and test prep. "When you teach, you learn" is a truism that has helped me grow and flourish throughout the years. I want my students to succeed and feel supported because everyone needs that.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
To date, I have tutored over 6000 students. That kind of experience isn't something you see every day. You also influence someone's life in a positive way and give them a better idea of what education really means.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Communication. I am a stickler for good communication, but it's a two-way street. Not all clients are fully aware of how a business operates, so misconceptions and misunderstandings are a daily struggle. At the end of the day, it's important that you and your clients are always on the same page.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Never sell yourself short: own your worth!
- Create a great website that shows off your skills and products/services, so clients take your work seriously.
- Don't back down from your principles and policies, even if it means losing a client.
