Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Natalie Firstenberg, Owner of Natalie Firstenberg, M.A., located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is a private practice counseling and coaching individuals and couples struggling to improve communication and create meaningful, nurturing relationships. I see many people who have experienced trauma, disappointment, and isolation.

Tell us about yourself

My first career was in the film and television industry in production and casting. I found that what I enjoyed the most was having authentic & interesting conversations with creative people. I was particularly interested in transformation and the deeper connection between ourselves and the external world.

It was in my own therapy I discovered I could do that best in my own practice as a counselor and returned to graduate school. I continue to be fulfilled each time I interact with my clients and am motivated by what's possible when we engage in conversations that support growth and change.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'd say when clients return after many years of being apart and want to re-engage in those conversations. This has happened frequently in my practice of 28 years.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Although I had skype and phone sessions with clients who moved to various parts of the globe, I wasn't accustomed to solely having a virtual business. Since the pandemic arrived, that has become the norm, and there are times I truly miss sitting down with someone in person. Perhaps I will return to that someday. Otherwise, I have found nothing but joy in being a business owner.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your research on what others might be doing that is similar so you can stand apart.
  2. Do your research so that you can be part of a community. It can be lonely at times.
  3. It's important not to be hard on yourself when there are less productive days. Remember your strengths.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I have met many couples who have not mastered the art of communication. Most issues can find resolved if discussions can move things forward.
