Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Natalie Georgiou, Owner of Nat Marie Yoga, located in Melbourne, Victoria, AU.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I offer yoga classes through Livestream and in-person sessions, focusing on teaching people how to do yoga work for you to get the most benefits. I teach with modifications and props to ensure many options are available for each pose so people can choose the best way to practice in a way that works best for their bodies.

Tell us about yourself

I first started teaching children's yoga in primary schools and loved being able to give children these tools like self-regulation, self-acceptance, and self-knowledge I wish I'd had as a child. I soon realized many adults like me also needed to learn these skills they missed out on as a child. This is what motivated me to teach adult yoga. This is also why I theme my weekly classes to invite people to bring some awareness to the philosophy of yoga and take that into their everyday life too.

Yoga is much more than stretching your muscles and bending into pretzel-like shapes. As a yoga teacher, I strive to take the focus away from the aesthetically-pleasing poses we see online and back to why we do these poses and how they can be modified. So everyone can feel comfortable practicing yoga, regardless of their experience or ability.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far is just being here as a yoga teacher and being able to teach regular classes in my community each week. When I first did my teacher training, I wasn't sure if I was doing it just for me to deepen my knowledge about yoga or if I was doing it so I could teach yoga.

I soon realized it was for both reasons. Not long after, I was offered the opportunity to work alongside an already existing fitness business and provide weekly yoga classes to a fantastic community. It gave me the confidence to keep at it and work on growing my business to reach more people and continue sharing the tools of yoga.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the most complex parts of being a business owner, at least for me, is putting myself out there and promoting my services on social media and through my website. I must constantly remind myself of the importance of this to share the benefits of yoga with more and more people in my community.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be patient. A business takes time to grow, and every little progress counts.
  2. If it is something you love, always return to your passion when in doubt to remind yourself why you are here.
  3. Be open-minded. The path you first had in mind may change along the way as new opportunities arise and new ideas interest you.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

If you've ever been recommended to try yoga and still haven't given it a go, please step out of your comfort zone and give it a try! There are so many different styles of yoga and so many benefits to gain. It just might be what you need for your body aches, anxiety, or anything else that is drawing you towards yoga. :)
