Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nan McKay, founder of Nan McKay Connects, LLC, located in Camas, WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Nan McKay Connects, LLC empowers people to become leadership savvy in their business or organization through speaking engagements, courses, books, podcasts, and YouTube channels. I also have a Do-It-For-You component of the business. I have three pillars: Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Reignite Your Life with Significance which is especially for women over 60 who want a successful retirement. Our primary customers are women over 60 who want to make a difference in the world.

Tell us about yourself

I changed my role in the large business I founded in 1980, which now has 2000 employees, and I am now President of the Board. I was not satisfied with anything resembling inactivity and was seeking significance in my retirement. Significance, to me, means using your knowledge and experience to change the lives of others. I started Nan McKay Connects with a podcast and have grown it to provide a plethora of resources for people like me - who want to make a difference in the lives of others. I use my past leadership and entrepreneurial experience to empower others, particularly women. I love being a "can do" influencer. If I can do it at 80, you can do it, too, at whatever age you are.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being "the wind beneath the wings" of many people in a variety of roles. I want people to succeed! I want them to make a difference in the world and follow their passion wherever it leads them.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Today, because most businesses people are starting to have a strong online component, the hardest part is learning everything that is digitally needed for marketing. I have learned about social media marketing, from funnels to landing pages to lead magnets. Education takes a large part of my budget, but I am continuing to learn how to do something every day.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Learn and implement the digital aspects of marketing your business. If you don't do something well, hire an expert to do the work (Fiverr, Upwork) but know enough about it that you can direct the person and take it over if you have to.
  2. Learn your productivity blockers, like shiny objects, and bust them.
  3. Find a coach/advisor you can work with - you could start with a free program like SBA's SCORE.
