What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is Nails with Ashleigh, and I’m known on Instagram as fauxjacat. My clients are art lovers all around the world! I do nails as a service and make custom press-ons that can travel anywhere.
Tell us about yourself
I started playing with nail art around 2012. It was just a fun thing to do on the side while I worked jobs that paid the rent. I started (and quit) vet tech school, had a baby, and then worked at the grocery store for about two years. When I had enough of that, I started to think about what I would enjoy doing all day. I pictured myself sitting in my own cute private studio, having fun and being creative. What motivates me every day is the fact that now I’m living my dream! Getting paid to do what I love feels so good.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner was reaching financial stability as a single parent. I still have goals to reach, but right now, I feel so accomplished being able to provide everything my child wants and needs.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is time management. I’ve had my business for almost three years, and there’s still so much to do and learn.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have boundaries, but also be kind. This will gain you more clients than having a rigid, cold way of doing things.
- Don’t drink, smoke weed, or eat too much junk food while you’re trying to build your business. Even if you see yourself as “functioning,” you can do more with a clear mind.
- Lean on a support system. If you don’t have family or are an introvert, open yourself to having a couple of good friends who are willing to help, even in small ways.
