What's your business, and who are your customers?
Myuterus.de is a review platform for contraception. Contraceptive users can share their experiences about different products and help each other find the right contraception more quickly. The reviews focus mainly on the tolerability of different products, for example, their side effects such as libido loss, headaches, abdominal pain, or effects on the psyche.
Our users are mainly female. Many are in their 20s to 30s and are concerned with the effects of the birth control pill and other hormonal contraceptives on their bodies. Consider that many women use contraception for 30 years of their lives - so it's worth investing time to find the right product.
Tell us about yourself
The idea for myuterus came from a problem of my own: I had severe side effects from my hormonal contraception. I doubted my body and spent nights googling my symptoms but couldn't find any information - neither through my gynecologist nor online. That's when I decided to create a place to educate about side effects and create transparency.
Coming from a marketing background, I may not be the typical founder, but I have the skills to build a brand and create reach. I used all my free time to build and promote the website. Thankfully, myuterus.de was immediately very popular, and reviews kept coming in, which motivated me to keep going.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My goal was for women who suffer from side effects and doubt their bodies to find a place to go online. The fact that myuterus now ranks at the top of Google for many popular contraceptives makes me very proud. Today, if a woman gets a bad migraine from her pill, she will find experiences from others at myuterus.de and realize that she is not alone with the problem and there is a solution.
That is all I ever wanted to achieve. It is also a huge vote of confidence that people trust the site with their - often very intimate - stories about contraception. I truly believe that the platform helps people find the right contraception faster.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
It is difficult to face all the challenges light-heartedly and optimistically - especially as a solo founder. Founding brings many unexpected problems, demands, and bills that can make you despair. Giving yourself pep talks over and over again and continuing to work with confidence is the hardest part for me.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Burn for the idea. It will carry you through hard times.
- Have realistic expectations. Starting a business is hard work and will limit your free time.
- Network with other founders. Advice and comfort from people who are going the same way will make it easier and more enjoyable.
