What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm an author and speaker who works with professional businesswomen.

Tell us about yourself

I've been speaking and writing for over twenty years, starting as a corporate trainer and moving into writing, keynotes, and conference breakout sessions.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Releasing my memoir, "Building A Life You Love After Losing the Love of Your Life."

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things is having to be in charge of everything. It takes a bit to see what to outsource and how you can focus on what you do well and pay others to do what you aren't so good at.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Purpose - get clear on why your want to start a business. What's your end game? Do you plan to build a business you can sell, a business that will be handed down in your family, or a business that's just you, and when you retire, it closes. This decision will guide many of your decisions.
  2. Passion - know what business you want to start and identify your target customer. What does your business provide, to whom, and why? Are you passionate enough about the product, service or customers to love doing it even during difficult times?
  3. Profit - Get a CPA who will not only do your taxes but also act as a CFO for hire and work with you to establish budgets, project income/expenses, and track actual against forecasts. If you aren't making the money you need to make, you can't achieve what you want to achieve.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Starting and running a business can be one of the most rewarding things you do, but it isn't always as great as it sounds. Yes, you're your own boss. You're also the one carrying the most responsibility and making the difficult decisions, even in areas where you may not excel.
