Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Carson Myers, Owner of Myers Surfboards, located in Wahiawa, HI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Custom surfboards for people who want something that surfs beautifully and looks beautiful.

Tell us about yourself

I grew up on Kauai and started surfing when I was around 13 years old. I then moved to Oahu when I was 17. It wasn't until I was about 20 that I started to wonder what made some surfboards good and some bad. I started to help out around a local surfboard company called Two Crows, just sweeping the floors, polishing some art they made, emails, and such. I also got to watch Carl Olsen (the shaper) shape a few boards, and when I was ready to try and shape my first board, he let me use all his tools.

The first board was a 5'8" shortboard, and it was horrible! I surfed it two or three times and then sold it for $100. I had to make another to try and redeem myself. Two Crows was primarily a longboard company, so I watched longboards being shaped all the time. For my second board, I decided to shape a longboard. It worked! Not a perfect surfboard, but it was good enough to spark a desire to get better and continue to learn. And that kinda stoke is definitely driving the business nowadays as well. Just trying to get better and better at every aspect of this business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Making a living doing something that I love and getting to be my own boss is probably the best thing.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

That would have to be the organization of everything. There are so many moving parts, and keeping all of that flowing is really hard.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Set goals almost daily.
  2. Network.
  3. Keep overhead as low as possible.
