Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cole and Cory Myers, Founders of Myers Hoops, located in Ankeny, IA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a basketball training business that focuses on player development. We train 3rd-grade boys and girls up to college/pro men and women.

Tell us about yourself

We are twin brothers who are player development coaches in Des Moines, Iowa. We have always loved basketball and started playing at a really young age. We played high school basketball for 4 years and then went on to play Division 2 basketball at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri. After we were done playing in college, we knew that we wanted to stay around the game, so we started our own training business in Des Moines, where we grew up. Helping athletes get better, understand the overall game, and succeed is what motivates us each day. Our goal as player development coaches is to develop skilled basketball players that understand how to play the game the right way. Skill + Basketball IQ = GOAL!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Our biggest accomplishment as business owners is just helping our athletes get better every time they are in the gym working out with us. It's really rewarding to see athletes continue to get better and more confident in their overall game which leads to in-game success. We are here to help and guide our athletes, but it's their own passion, commitment, and investment that is truly going to get them better.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As player development coaches, we love our job. Some of the hardest/worst things about our job is having to charge for our service, late nights in the gym, and athletes/parents complaining to us about other teams/coaches/players.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you love what you are doing.
  2. Just do it. Quit thinking about it and actually make it happen.
  3. Don't give up. It might be hard, and there might be some setbacks, but fight through it and continue to work towards your goals.
