Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Robin Moore, owner of MyCo Planet, LLC, located in North Kansas City, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are an urban mushroom farm growing gourmet mushrooms using vertical and controlled environment farming. Our customers are restaurants, grocery stores, and farmer's markets.

Tell us about yourself

I've always had a love for nature and its amazing diversity and self-sustaining ecosystems that exist on this planet. I decided to start growing mushrooms as a way of creating food, providing education for the children, and being closer to nature at a time when we were all spending too much online. I have always enjoyed growing my own food and believe it is important for my children to know how to grow their own food as well. We also enjoy cooking with mushrooms. When we could not find the varieties we wanted to use at the store, I decided to start growing them myself. It was just an extension of gardening for me. My background is all science, and I have worked in labs and know how to do sterile techniques.

MyCo Planet is a woman-owned and operated business that is dedicated to sustainability and education. Located in North Kansas City, the farm produces a variety of nutritious mushrooms using eco-friendly methods. We are committed to sustainability and organic practices, using only the highest quality ingredients and techniques to grow our mushrooms to ensure that we are leaving a positive impact on the environment. We believe in the power of collaboration and are dedicated to building strong relationships with our community and supporting local initiatives. We hope that our mushrooms will bring people together and foster a love of fungi.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

What started out as growing food for my family turned out to be a growing business that has created a local food source and jobs that did not exist before. I am thankful every day that I have found and built this community around me of like-minded people and business owners.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a small business owner is the amount of responsibility that comes with it. Small business owners are responsible for every aspect of their business, from finance and marketing to operations and customer service.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Stay organized. As a small business owner, you have a lot of tasks to do in one day, so it's crucial to stay organized. Use tools like calendars, to-do lists, and project management software to keep track of your tasks and deadlines.
  2. Make sure your finances are in order and you're keeping accurate records of your income and expenses. Know where every dollar is going and track everything.
  3. As a small business owner, it's easy to get caught up in the daily grind and feel like you need to be working all the time. However, it's so important to take a break once in a while to avoid burnout and maintain your health.
