Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jackie Cohen, founder of My Story Jewelry, located in Secaucus, NJ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My Story Jewelry is a fun collection of fine jewelry that uses color (think elevated birthstones) to celebrate the ones you love. It started as a simple birthstone ring I made for myself when my daughter was born. I became a single mom through adoption, and so it was a labor of love. Many items can be personalized with initials and engraved with messages. A portion of sales goes back to a charity or adoption called, Help us Adopt.org.

Tell us about yourself

I wake up every day jonesing about my to-do list. I am very task-oriented, and it helps me sleep at night to write the list the day before.

There are a few things that motivate me. Being able to provide for my family by creating a life/career where I can find fulfilling work, pay for our lives and be a present mom. Creating amazing pieces of jewelry that will live forever with someone to celebrate their kids, a lost one, or themselves. The opportunity to create something so special blows my mind! Lastly, just making beautiful jewelry. No one needs jewelry. It's a luxury, and it's a great feeling to be surrounded by beautiful things and feels inspired and fulfilled each day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Creating a business where I can work and be a full-time mom. I have a job that allows me to be at pick-up most days and take her to sports, parties, and horseback riding lessons. I could never be as hands-on working for someone else.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Balance...money, paycheck, insurance, vacation. You do it all. No one pays your rent, employees, or health insurance but you.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. You have to be extremely committed to your brand. You have to do all the hard work. There are no shortcuts.
  2. You have to have a clear vision of your brand/product.
  3. You must love it.
