Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ronnie Harper, Co-Founder of My Sports Dietitian, located in Gonzales, LA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My Sports Dietitian is a comprehensive online sports nutrition services and education platform with the simple mission of helping athletes improve their eating habits. When athletes improve their eating habits, they also improve their energy levels, body weight composition, strength, focus, and endurance. We provide both individual and team services using modern technologies such as the Eat 2 Win app and include highly qualified Sports Dietitian professionals.
We focus on active individuals. Athletes love our Eat 2 Win app, but it is for anyone wanting to improve their eating habits. We provide team sports nutrition services in the college, high school, and sports performance facilities with the TEAM NUTRITION PLAN. We also service individual athletes with the MY NUTRITION PLAN. An athlete works directly with a Sports Dietitian to improve their eating habits and as they develop a customized individual plan to meet the athlete's health and athletic performance goals.
Tell us about yourself
As a High School Athletic Trainer, I found myself needing to refer my athletes to a Sports Dietitian. However, the nearest one I could find was one hour away. I began working remotely with Tavis, and as we worked together, we began to develop resources to meet the needs of my athletes virtually. Over time it developed into a business that extends our model to other professionals looking to provide sports nutrition education and services virtually to an individual or a team of athletes.
I love the challenge of starting and developing an online business. It is like riding a roller coaster. You have your ups and downs, and it is scary and exciting all at the same time. I enjoy the challenge it brings, and I look forward to achieving our goal of extending our services to athletes, coaches, and parents all around the world.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
We have a very loyal audience that trusts us to deliver high-quality content and services. Our audience is represented in 69 different countries. Our focus is in the USA but to imagine that we can have an impact around the globe is very exciting for us. We really enjoy getting positive feedback when we provide our services to our athletic community.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Keeping a balance between executing what needs to happen today and planning for the future. We are constantly doing product market research and refining our products and services. We are implementing more and more data points in order to make more strategic decisions in the future. It just takes time and patience to set up all of the metrics, marketing, and service to be a great online virtual business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be persistent and have patience. Build it one step at a time.
- Cash flow is king, so make sure you have at least one solid source of revenue but don't stop there. You need multiple sources of income to diversify and establish a base that can weather the ups and downs of being a business.
- Don't get discouraged. Failure only happens if you do not learn from your mistakes.
