Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in clothing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kaitlin Suykens, Founder of My Little Sonshine Co., located in Strathmore, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is creating the most trendy and modern custom crewnecks and t-shirts for mamas and their little boys. I have also recently started taking custom orders for designs and branding for business.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Kaitlin Suykens, and I am a pediatric acute care/ emergency nurse. My favourite job, though, is being a mama to my two little boys, Kane (2.5) and Kade (16 months). I loved creating modern, simplistic crew necks for them and decided to give my creative mind and outlet and offer boy mamas cute clothing for themselves and their little men. What motivates me to do what I do is my boys; I want to be able to show them that you can do anything you set your mind to, no matter where you started from.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been how much love and support I receive from my customers. Hearing how much they love the products, I select, and the designs I choose means the world to me. Secondly, I would say another accomplishment is creating a birth flower shirt design that I have created for several Mothers, Grandmas, and Aunties. This design has allowed me to get to know my customers on a more personal basis and hear all about their little ones in their lives that make them so special.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Some of the hardest things about running a small business are managing workload, family life, and the endless to-do list. Running a small business, at least at the beginning, requires quick response times, responding on weekends and late nights, all while still trying to maintain a full-time job and dinner made on the table.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Stay true to yourself, remember why you started your business, and let that be your drive to push through the obstacles and hardships that you may encounter along the way.
  2. Connect with other small businesses in your community; they give you such great advice and will be your biggest cheerleader!
  3. Do what you love, and if it makes your heart happy, that’s all that matters!
