Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in e-commerce but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shereen Campbell, Founder and CEO of My Little Magic Shop LLC., located in New York City, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a self-care exploration platform focused on guiding the inward journey to emotional and spiritual well-being while also providing the metaphysical tools and community to support and empower participants. The key drivers in facilitating this inward journey consist of three parts education, tools, and community scaled through the use of technology. We intend to leverage these key components to help others be their own guru! Through using mystical modalities, we help participants discover new practices, introduce them to new tools, educate them on these techniques and support them as they finally start listening to their own inner wisdom. Our customers have a deep interest in personal development, spirituality, and mysticism.

Tell us about yourself

I created My Little Magic Shop as a way to avoid the arduous journey to self-love and self-care I experienced. When I turned 30, I had the typical freak-out about my life and trajectory. I had this fantastic corporate retail career but felt completely uninspired and burnt out. I also had this LOVE for astrology and metaphysical practices. At the time, I had been practicing Astrology as a hobby for about ten years but could not see a career in the Mystical Arts. Well, the universe had other plans because when I lit a candle asking for clarity in my professional and life path, I was gifted with the message that I am to help others go through exactly what I was going through now. I was to help them navigate their own self-care journeys and empower them with the tools they needed to find the guru within themselves. I was to merge my extensive retail and e-commerce background with my love for self-development using alternative practices.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I love to receive notes and letters about how we have influenced or helped our customers discover their intuition and manifest changes in their life. This makes me the proudest.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

When you are bootstrapping, figuring out how to make the most of the money you have is super important but very difficult at times. I have to be super resourceful and strategic to ensure we invest wisely. Making mistakes really, really, really sucks, but I've had to just take the L and learn from them.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you pick a vision or mission, not a product. It's your mission or vision that will keep you going, not trying to sell an item or service. If you are not inspired and motivated by your vision or mission to bring relief or joy to someone's life, don't even bother. Starting a business is really, really, really hard. You will cry almost as much as you do dances of joy. Both might happen on the same day, within hours of each other. It's an emotional rollercoaster. There will be times when you want to scream F everything and just give up. It will only be your connection to your vision that will motivate you to keep going. If you aren't head over heels IN LOVE with your mission, then it's not worth the heartache of pursuing it.
  2. Get comfortable with failure. You will mess things up; you will fail; you will hear no, a lot. That's okay. The more comfortable you are with failure, the faster you bounce back from it, and the more likely it is that your business will succeed and deliver the results you hope for. If you allow failure to erode your confidence or belief in yourself, then don't bother starting a business.
  3. Be flexible to change. The change will come fast, hard and furious. Embrace it. Anticipate it. Egg it on. Change breeds innovation.
