Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in music education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Jan McMillan, Founder of Music Moments, located in Perth, WA, Australia.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I provide courses, private lessons, and professional services to piano teachers and pianists at any level to inspire them to reach their full potential.

Tell us about yourself

After having both professional and unprofessional experiences as a piano student, I became passionate about piano teaching and wanted to improve an unregulated industry.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Having very loyal students who have achieved very highly as pianists and teachers. Being recommended and sought out by other music businesses. Designing my website and then starting courses.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Being a sole trader is difficult, and not many people understand our business and our isolation. Mind you; this prep made the pandemic easier for us!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take your time. Your timeline is different from the universe.
  2. Plan, learn from others continually, and observe before launching anything. You can always update.
  3. There's plenty of room in the world for everyone, so don't compare. You are unique.
