Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in sports coaching but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mark Gelgor, Co-owner of Sportball Ltd., located in Thornhill, Ontario, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We do sports instruction for kids aged between 16 months and 12 years old.
Tell us about yourself
I started the business nearly 27 years ago with my wife when we immigrated from South Africa. What motivates me every day is making a difference in the lives of young children where we teach them the fundamental skills to a lifetime of sports activity. If you inspire SUCCESS in kids' lives, they will come back for more. Wouldn't you?
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Inspiring young entrepreneur and their coaches to follow the Sportball dream in making a difference in kids' lives. We have grown the brand across Canada, the US and Singapore.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The toughest piece is making sure that the business is growing and moving forward. Your people need to see "the never give up attitude," and hopefully, this inspires them to do the same. We were shut down for 14 months through the pandemic as kids could not get together to play sport, so we reinvented ourselves with a totally new Sportball virtual product.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- You must love what you do every day.
- Be consistent in being the best self every day.
- Never give up.
