Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in coaching but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Eric Pfeiffer, Founder of MPWR Coaching, located in San Diego, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a Leadership Coaching business focused on helping leaders and teams operate at increasingly higher levels. We help businesses replace workplace toxicity and unnecessary turnover with a healthy, collaborative, synergistic environment.

You can have a bunch of A players, but if they’re not operating from the same playbook, they won’t win as often as they should. We offer leaders a simple, transferable, and scalable leadership playbook that puts everyone on the same page to perform more effectively under increasing pressure.

We work with organizations across many industries, including professional sports, pharmaceuticals, construction, law, government, eyewear, food distribution, etc.

Tell us about yourself

My coaching business is the overflow of my journey of realizing my EQ often undermined my IQ. In other words, under pressure, I often saw the worst version of myself coming out and hindering my leadership. I realized that I was my own worst enemy and needed to develop a new set of skills that would empower me to operate well when the heat gets turned up.

Years later, I looked around and realized I was not alone. Many leaders around me were struggling to take their leadership to new levels precisely because they lacked the skills associated with emotional intelligence that I had been learning. I decided to start a coaching business that would train leaders in the skills I had never learned through my many years of schooling.

I am motivated every day by the desire to change the world by helping leaders become a better version of themselves. Healthier leaders mean healthier organizations, and everyone wins!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is creating an organization that embodies the same principles, practices, and power we coach others toward. Though imperfect, we pride ourselves on growing our clients through word of mouth. We want our business to grow because it works, and our clients can’t wait to tell others about their experience with us. That only happens if we can model in our behavior what we encourage them to fight for.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I tell business owners it’s a lonely world when you’re on top of the pile. People who do not own businesses have difficulty appreciating the various challenges unique to this role. No matter how certain I may feel about any decision, there is always a measure of doubt I’m battling. My decisions, in many ways, have a much greater impact on the business, both for better and for worse. For this reason, I have gathered a group of business owners with whom I meet regularly to get feedback, counsel, and encouragement.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start a business you believe in, that you believe the world needs. If you don’t have a clear WHY when starting a business, it’s easy to give up when the going gets tough - and it will.
  2. Do whatever you can to find a few other business owners who will meet with you regularly to offer support, challenge, and lots of encouragement. Your confidence in your decisions will grow significantly if you support this kind of team.
  3. Building a business takes way more time than anyone imagines. There are ups and downs; there are times when you feel elated and others when you feel stressed and overwhelmed. You will make many mistakes, but your willingness to persevere and take the long view will pay off.
