Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chase Hattie, Executive Vice President of mowPod, located in New York City, New York, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

mowPod is the largest driver of performance-based download and subscriber acquisition for podcasts looking to expand their audiences.

Tell us about yourself

We initially kicked off in the newsletter space after seeing an opportunity to help newsletters grow their audience through scalable, cost-efficient but often overlooked channels within the careers space. After establishing ourselves as leaders in newsletter growth, we saw that podcasts were becoming the fastest-growing media medium and that podcasts had similar growth needs to our newsletter clients, so we went to the drawing board and figured out how we could help podcasts increase listenership. We're motivated to continue leading the space and develop AdTech that helps our clients maximize the social and commercial impact of their shows.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We're extremely proud of the amazing brands we're lucky enough to call our clients, such as Conde Nast, Oprah Winfrey Network, Warner Music Group, and iHeart Media, to name a few!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Innovating new products in a fast-growing space means we must continually look for ways to improve our existing products and differentiate ourselves from impending competition.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do it with people you trust and respect - you'll go through some tough times (especially in the early stages) while growing a business. Make sure you have partners that can stick it out and keep cool-headed.
  2. Hire slowly. We didn't hire additional staff outside of the founding team for almost two years. When it came to finally doing it, we only hired people who shared the same core values and long-term interests as ourselves, which has proved incredibly effective for productivity and staff retention.
  3. Be transparent as possible! Transparency is at the core of our values and has helped us build long-lasting relationships with our clients.
