Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Morgan Hill, Owner of Mount Cabot Maple, located in Lancaster, NH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We're a single-source, unblended maple syrup and sugarmaker, producing some of the finest maple products available. Our customers are gourmet food purveyors and loyal maple lovers who refuse to use any other syrup once they try ours.

Tell us about yourself

We are a small, queer, women-run business. We are motivated by bringing other women and queer people into this style of work and life, teaching hard skills, and creating opportunities for folks like us to see our strength and ability to achieve in cis-male-dominated fields of forestry and agriculture.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Having an all-women staff! Hiring in a rural area is particularly difficult, but our web is strong, and we are elated to be fulfilling a core mission of offering meaningful and enriching work to our community.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It's difficult to prioritize what's important versus what's fun. We love the variety of things that we get to do, and it can be easy to spend hours doing things that are more enjoyable (like stacking wood) than things that are less fun (administrative work). There are an endless number of hats to wear, from sales and distribution to mechanics and repair, and to make the ship sail smoothly, many of these have to be worn at the same time! It's tough to always feel like there's something not getting done, even when you've just had a highly productive day.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Don't be afraid to hire out and delegate! You can't do everything yourself. Make sure you spend time doing things you enjoy and get help where you need it. It's not always cheaper to figure it out yourself.
