Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in design services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jacob Morrise, CEO of Morrise Products, located in Lehi, UT, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Morrise Products is a small product design business that helps customers go from idea to concept, design, and manufacturing for mechanical and electromechanical products and devices.

Tell us about yourself

I have been a product designer since 2006 and have helped design everything from airplanes to the first Ring doorbell. I love working on consumer products the most. As a father of 10 young kids, many of the products I work on are centered around kids and families. My primary goal is to help make the world happier and safer.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The biggest accomplishment for me is being in business for 4 years and still getting to do what I love. For me, it is about designing high-quality products and spending time with my family.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

My biggest worry as a business owner is making sure that the business makes enough money for my family to eat and be comfortable.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start early; a lot of growing a new business, in the beginning, is making contacts and figuring out your plan. This can be done before you leave your current job.
  2. Spend money in the right ways. Be frugal, but remember that your time is valuable as well. Don't spend 10 hours to save $50. Wasting time can be just as bad as wasting money.
  3. Make sure you love what you are doing. You're going to be doing a lot of it, and it will get hard and frustrating sometimes, so make sure you are passionate about what you do.
